Froyos’ Frosty Face-off

There’s something sinister about an ice-cold tilt in the frozen delight world. Blogger, Jareliese Mauro, chills out with containers of cold, creamy concoction of frozen yogurt in hand.

You could just thaw to an overwhelming feeling to the nippy fact that frozen yogurt shops are serving chilly cups of delight faster than water freezing into ice. They are everywhere. Mini containers exhibiting fluffy swirls laced with sauces or peppered with cereal or fruits—or a mixture of it all. Yes, frozen yogurt is now Cebu ’s healthy “it” snack. But behind this designer cuppa soft-serve is a heated competition. Be guided by the following observations:

YUMMY YO’s (gnd. flr., The Forum, Archbishop Reyes)
“Have your yogurt the yummy way.”

Froyo junkies cram inside on a drafty twilight, the line spilling out the transparent door of this well-lighted, faddish yogurt shop. Their menu is as animated as the atmosphere of their antsy crowd. You dismiss thoughts of cussing the scale as you imagine gormandizing on their strawberry froyo (with real bits!) in trio proportions: small (P90), medium (P110), and family (P145). The plain variation is popularly priced.

Verdict: Tart treat
Boo-boo: Traffic logjam just outside the shop
Thumbs-up: Drive-thru option; bounteous portions
Must-try: Strawberry froyo in blue crush or chocolate monster mix.

FRIZBERRY YOGURT (SM City Cebu , 3rd level)
“Healthy lifestyle in a yogurt.”

Froyo addicts get the fermented fix without that familiar too-sweet-to-be-yogurt taste of the artificial flavoring. And in its three sizes, small (P75), medium (P95), and large (P105), a copious cup of plain yogurt is ready for ravaging. It comes in three’s as well for their Yo-shake: 12oz. (P80), 16oz. (P95), 22oz. (P110). Their products in strawberry flavor are slightly pricier than the original flavor.

Verdict: Tart treat
Boo-boo: No chairs available for sitting.
Thumbs-up: Generous helping
Must-try: Strawberry yogurt with double Dutch toppings

YO-GO BOY (BTC, Banilad)
“Made for kids. Loved by adults.”

It’s the taste that catapulted scores of requests from kids for an after-school treat. But the taste is worth the try that even adults have chimed in for a snack of their own while their tot’s orders are being taken. A band of froyo fiends will surely show aggression just to savor either of the following: Yo-go Boy (P75, with 1 free topping), Yo-go waffle (P85), Yo-go refreshers (P95), or Yo-go parfait (P95, 3 fruits and 1 cereal with yogo).
Verdict: Milky sweet
Boo-boo: More caffeine breaks for their staff
Thumbs-up: Clean and eye-catching interiors
Must-try: Yo-go parfait with mangoes, kiwi, grapes, and fruit loops

COFFEE CAT (IT Park)
“It’s time to get refreshed.”

One can’t maintain a poker-faced front after a spoonful of Coffee Cat’s frozen yogurt: a large cup with 3 toppings is priced at P185. Your face could contort into that of a glutton’s after tasting it. Each personalized cup (your name written on it), is a heavenly wallop without remorse.

Verdict: Tart treat
Boo-boo: Amount of serving is not consistent; frequency to this shop is directly proportional to a person’s purchasing power (read: hefty paycheck).
Thumbs-up: Plush interiors invite guests for a longer dilly-dally moment.
Must-try: Green tea yogurt with strawberries and Japanese taro mochi

YOGORINO Italy (Robinson’s CyberGate, Fuente)
“Best tasting yoghurt in the world.”

A sweet-tooth will say that, arguably speaking, Yogorino meets their tagline. Dollops of “350 milioni probiotic ferments” in their Italian baby yoghurt (P85, with two toppings) has a rich texture. Founded in Italy (1994), the brand claims to be the original pro-biotic in the soft ice industry. It’s low-fat, low calorie, and organic.
Verdict: Milky sweet
Boo-boo: A whopper serving wouldn’t hurt; limited space for eating
Thumbs-up: Knowledgeable staff
Must-try: Plain yogurt with Italian sauces
