TASTE TEST: More Than Satisfactory

TASTE TEST: More Than Satisfactory

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s give a warm welcome to the sports bar cum restaurant which continuously revolutionizes the party and dining scene.

“Werd,” is what most American teenagers, from the MTV generation, say when they agree on a subject or when they think it is swell but in the ‘70’s, the word “Phat” meant “cool.” Coincidentally, Terrence Yee, a California-based culinary consultant and brother-in-law of the pub owner used arrive in Cebu for a visit every Thursday, hence, the name of the phat-est (pun intended) hangout, “Phat Thursday Sports Bar and Restaurant.”

Softly-lit, this 200 sq.m. space was designed by the creative Archt. Jonjie Belen. The atmosphere shouts of masculine territory and mania. Why not? With twilight companions like Bacardi Oro, Carlos I, and Jack Daniel’s glowing from the lights of the frosted-glass bar counter fashioned like a snake, who wouldn’t think one is in a virile kingdom? To top it all off, four 42-inch LCD TVs are stationed against the wall for viewing pleasure of the next Pacquiao fight or of an RPG to be played using the latest wireless game consoles which are also available for renting. Three large cue balls, 2 feet in diameter, loom large near the ceiling. “This place reeks of Sean Connery’s sex appeal,” remarks an observer who nods approvingly. But hardcore gamers, billiards and darts freaks shouldn’t celebrate just yet. After all, there is enough space for everyone.

Sara Lucero, 30, managing the food business since 2005, aims to level up the bar’s publicity a notch by presenting it to the market as a wholesome restaurant catering to the gustatory needs of all ages and sexes. It should be a cinch. How so? Ever since Phat Thursday Sports Bar and Restaurant had made its mark in the 2nd floor of Banilad Town Center, foot traffic increased. Blame it on authentic and scrumptious American dishes which are currently the talk of the town!

A mouth-watering roll-call of great food that you can choose from the menu includes appetizers, pasta, sandwiches, burgers, soup and salad, whiskey river barbecue, entrees, and desserts. You can almost taste the American culture in its good-for-two servings of Bottomless Fries, Corn Dog, Fish & Chips, Monte Cristo Sandwich, and Glazed Meatloaf. When it comes to the toothsome issues of dieting and portion control, one throws caution in the air and exchange those months of agitating sweat sessions in the gym with a mouthful of Chicken Pot Pie, a curious combination of chicken, celery, onion, peas, carrots, heavy cream sauce, herbs, and baked biscuits; and a swig of Orange Creamsicle, a blend of the citrus tang, sugar, and, milk. Imagine yourself having to score a deal with a big shot client in the bar’s twenty-seater conference room with free wifi connection. You can never go wrong by serving them with Mexican Braised Pork (Spanish rice, buttered corn, pork, green garnish) and a good portion of the Chicken Salad (peanut, orange pulp, extra crispy cabbage, meaty chicken bits, and crunchy crackers) all to be washed down by the famous Pineapple Colada (pineapple and coconut). Food critics swear by the heavenly taste of the deep fried Honey Walnut Prawns. The Phat Burger, a stack of onions, beef, spam, egg, lettuce, tomato, onion straws, and cheese is also bistro classic. Writing about it could never do justice to its flavorful taste. Pair it with the Strawberry slushee (strawberry and pineapple bits)! It’s a perfect match!

“I’ve been eating for the better part of my life. Food for me is life’s simple pleasures. Eating is what one does everyday so why not celebrate it with good food? Variety is the spice of life,” says food expert Terrence whose face creases in a beam and his chinky eyes reduces to a slit. Phat Thursday’s management and staff’s goal is to make customers happy and satisfied. Everything has to be right.

Rejoice all you food buffs! Phat Thursday is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. Confide your esculent concerns to the attendants who have all tasted the dishes for a solid testimonial. The mix of clientele who flock to the spot for sporting events, chill sessions of groovy tunes, or simply for dinner will never leave the sports bar & restaurant disappointed. In fact, Phat Thursday is par excellence that this hotspot has not only given Cebuanos a phat place to hang but has startled our taste buds.
